Gitanjali Angmo defies Ladakh administration, says Desert Flower School will continue operating

· India · Indian Express, The Hindu

Gitanjali Angmo, wife of climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, stated that the Desert Flower School will continue functioning despite the Ladakh administration's objections. She asserted that the administration's lease policy remains incomplete and accused authorities of delaying the execution of the lease deed themselves. Angmo revealed that they had sent five letters and visited offices since receiving a notice in August last year, but the policy was not ready. She added that the High Court of J&K and Ladakh had directed the administration not to create third-party rights on the land, allowing HIAL to continue activities pending court resolution. Construction for the school, funded by Public Sector Undertakings, began in 2023 and kindergarten classes started on November 2 this year.

Why it matters

The continuation of Desert Flower School affects students and the local community relying on the not-for-profit educational initiative, while the dispute highlights ongoing friction between HIAL leadership and the Ladakh administration over land and lease formalities.
