A glacial collapse and debris flow rather than an earthquake triggered catastrophic floods across the Nepal-Tibet border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The disaster killed at least 160 people and left hundreds missing after torrents of water and debris crashed downstream. The event occurred early on Wednesday, initially registering as a magnitude 5.2 seismic event that scientists later determined was a glacial collapse and debris flow. Nepal s Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal initially stated an earthquake likely triggered a landslide that blocked a river. Additional analysis of seismic stations, long period seismic waves, and satellite imagery confirmed no earthquake occurred.
