· World · India Today, Hindustan Times, Indian Express
A reported glacial lake outburst in Bhutan has triggered evacuation warnings downstream in West Bengal. Authorities are assessing the discharge while monitoring the Sankosh River for a possible surge. The incident was reported on Thursday evening at Chintaphu Lake, below Wakila Mountain in Lungo, Laya Gewog, in Bhutan's Gasa district. Sirens were sounded and residents close to riverbanks were moved to safer ground. West Bengal Forest Minister Manoj Kumar Oraon urged residents in Alipurduar district to evacuate as a precaution, warning of a possible surge reaching Kumargram within one to one-and-a-half hours.
Why it matters
The flood threat directly endangers riverside communities in West Bengal and Assam, risking farmland, livestock, infrastructure and human lives. The incident also tests hydrological data‑sharing cooperation between India and Bhutan in forecasting downstream impacts.
