Global Warming Could Reach 2.8°C This Century Without Urgent Cuts: UN Report
· World · Hindustan Times, NDTV
Global warming could reach 2.8°C within this century if current policies continue, according to a United Nations Environment Programme report released on Wednesday ahead of COP31 in Turkey. The Emissions Gap Report 2026 found that even if all Nationally Determined Contributions are fully delivered, warming will still hit 2.6°C this century. UNEP noted these projections worsened due to the US withdrawal from the Paris Agreement and revised historical emission estimates. To achieve an optimum pathway limiting peak warming to 1.7 to 1.8°C before returning to 1.5°C, global greenhouse gas emissions must drop 18% by 2030, 45% by 2035, and 69% by 2040 relative to 2025 levels. The report emphasizes that current global commitments fall significantly short of required reduction targets.
Why it matters
Accelerating global temperature rises threaten severe climate impacts worldwide, requiring drastic immediate emission cuts from major economies to avoid catastrophic tipping points.
