Goa Government Demands Tarun Tejpal Surrender Before Supreme Court Appeal

The Goa government has argued before the Supreme Court that Tarun Tejpal must surrender before his appeal against a rape conviction can be heard. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta stated that under the Supreme Court Rules of 2013, surrender is a mandatory prerequisite for listing an appeal. Tejpal, the former editor-in-chief of Tehelka, was sentenced to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment in 2026. His counsel, Kapil Sibal, countered that the appeal should proceed because the Bombay High Court had already granted a stay on the sentence. The Supreme Court is currently considering the application for exemption from surrender.
