Godavari Biorefineries Shares Surge 13% After Securing Chinese Patent for Viral Infection Treatment
· Business · LiveMint, Business Standard
Godavari Biorefineries’ shares jumped 13% to ₹258.87 on the NSE after the company received a patent from the Chinese Patent Office for compounds inhibiting V-ATPase activity, used in treating viral infections. The patent, granted on September 15, 2026, covers a class of compounds developed by inventors M. Atawar, S. Gawade, P. Kakkar, and S. Srivastava. This follows a Japanese patent granted in June 2026 for a cancer treatment compound, also developed by the company’s researchers. Despite the patent wins, the Maharashtra-based firm reported a wider Q1 FY27 loss of ₹19.3 crore, with EBITDA declining to ₹2.6 crore from ₹6.5 crore in the year-ago period. The company’s total income rose to ₹559.9 crore, up from ₹534 crore, indicating mixed financial performance amid patent-driven optimism.
Why it matters
Investors and stakeholders in biotech and pharmaceuticals will closely watch how these patents translate into commercial success for Godavari Biorefineries, given the company’s focus on high-value compounds for viral and cancer treatments. The stock rally highlights the potential for biotech firms to leverage international patents for market expansion, though profitability challenges remain a key concern for shareholders.
