Google Brings Its TPU Branding to Pixel 11 Smartphones

Google has extended its Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) branding from data centers to consumer smartphones, with the Pixel 11 series and its Tensor G6 chip claiming "50 percent more TPU compute." Internally, Google has used TPUs in its cloud infrastructure since 2015 to handle AI and machine learning workloads. On the Pixel 11, the TPU is effectively Google's rebrand of the Neural Processing Unit (NPU) found in modern smartphones, handling camera processing and on-device AI tasks. Google claims up to 3.5 times faster AI processing with up to 3.5 times less energy compared to the previous generation. TPUs and GPUs both perform AI calculations, but data center TPUs are tuned for large-scale AI model training while NPUs/GPUs in phones handle lighter on-device tasks.
Why it matters
The rebrand may confuse Pixel buyers comparing chipsets, but the underlying claim of faster, more efficient on-device AI matters for camera features and generative AI tools running locally on the phone. The TPU name also signals Google's broader push to brand its custom silicon across both cloud and mobile.
