Google DeepMind Releases WeatherNext 3 AI Weather Forecasting Model

Scientists at Google DeepMind and Google Research released WeatherNext 3, an advanced artificial intelligence weather forecasting model designed to predict atmospheric behavior with higher resolution and frequency. Google senior staff engineer Samier Merchant stated that the model will begin powering weather data across Google Search, Google Maps, and Gemini, while also launching on Google Cloud platforms for researchers. The model achieved top accuracy on Operational WeatherBench, outperforming competing deep learning tools from Microsoft, Nvidia, and the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasting, as well as traditional supercomputer forecasts from the US National Weather Service. WeatherNext 3 improves prediction resolution down to 5km, provides 60% better rainfall evaluation than its predecessor, and generates hourly forecasts instead of six-hour intervals.
