Google Enables Widespread VoLTE on Pixel 11 Phones in Unsupported Markets
· Technology · Android Authority, Hindustan Times
Google has enabled Voice over LTE on Pixel 11 series phones used in unsupported markets through a partnership with the GSMA. The capability was discovered by users running the Android 17 beta, with firmware files indicating support for carriers such as China Mobile, China Unicom, China Telecom, and CSL in Hong Kong. The integration utilizes the GSMA Network Settings Exchange, which serves as a centralized hub for carriers to upload configuration data. This approach eliminates the traditional requirement for smartphone manufacturers to negotiate and test networks individually with each carrier. However, older Pixel devices currently lack support for the feature, though software updates remain a possibility.
Why it matters
The rollout improves global connectivity for travelers and owners of imported Pixel devices by streamlining how carriers deliver VoLTE and 5G settings to smartphones.
