Google Photos adds Ask Photos feature to auto-create calendar events from event posters
· Technology · Android Authority, Gadgets360
Google Photos version 8.0 contains code enabling Ask Photos to extract event details — name, date, time, and description — directly from a photo of a printed poster. The feature requests calendar access and then hands the event to Android's native confirmation prompt, using the user's default calendar app rather than only Google Calendar. During testing, Ask Photos assumed a US time zone not specified on the poster, causing the event to be shifted to the wrong date and time. Google already offers a manual shortcut for some digital tickets and screenshots, but this new Ask Photos integration aims to automate the process for random flyers photographed on the street.
Why it matters
Users who frequently photograph event posters for later reference will save time by having Ask Photos automatically populate calendar entries, reducing missed events from forgotten flyers. The integration works across the user's default calendar app, making it accessible beyond just Google Calendar. However, users must remain alert to potential AI errors, such as incorrect time zone assumptions, which could shift event schedules.
