Google’s new SynthID website can identify AI-generated media

· Technology · TechCrunch, Android Authority

Google has launched a public website that allows anyone to verify whether an image, video, or audio clip is generated using artificial intelligence. The tool supports multiple file formats, including JPG, PNG, WEBP, MP4, MOV, WAV, and MP3, for comprehensive media checking. Google originally introduced SynthID in 2023 and has integrated the watermarking technology into models such as Nano Banana, Veo, Lyria, Gemini, and Google Chrome. Major technology companies including OpenAI, NVIDIA, and Kakao also support SynthID, while Apple is reportedly preparing to add support soon. People currently make one million requests to verify content every day, though verification tools can sometimes fail to identify content created by their makers' models.

Why it matters

The new verification tool gives journalists, researchers, and everyday consumers a reliable way to detect AI-generated media and combat digital misinformation.
