Google to shut down Gemini Gems feature, migrate to skills format

Google announced it is shutting down the Gemini feature Gems, which allowed users to build custom AI assistants for specific tasks. The company will automatically migrate Gems to a new 'skills' format starting November 17, 2026, preserving user-created content. Pre-made Gems included a learning coach, brainstorming assistant, career guide, coding partner, and editor, while users had also created custom assistants for running coaching, nutrition, and vacation planning. The new skill format requires users to type a forward slash in a task thread to select the skill, a user interface engineers prefer over regular chatbot interaction.
Why it matters
Users who invested time creating custom Gems will have their assistants automatically preserved and migrated, but the shift to a slash-based skill selection may reduce the feature's consumer-friendly appeal compared to simple text prompts.
