· India · The Hindu, Times of India
The Union government has scheduled the population enumeration phase of Census 2027 in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttarakhand, and Goa from November 16, 2026, to January 4, 2027. This exercise is being conducted ahead of the nationwide survey to avoid conflict with upcoming state elections. Conversely, the government has formally deferred the census in Manipur until further notice. The upcoming census will feature 40 questions, including a new open-ended field for recording caste details, marking a significant shift in data collection.
Why it matters
The inclusion of caste data in the census is a major policy change that will influence future reservation and welfare distribution frameworks in India.
