Government Allows Duty-Free Import of 10 Lakh Tonnes of Raw Sugar

The Indian government allowed duty-free imports of 10 lakh tonnes of raw sugar under a Tariff Rate Quota until October 31, 2026. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade issued the notification to enhance domestic availability and cap surging prices. The all-India average ex-mill price climbed to ₹5,400 to ₹5,500 per quintal, up from ₹3,900 a year earlier due to lower opening stock. Retail sugar prices rose about 13% year-on-year to ₹52.30 per kg as of August 18. Additionally, the Food Ministry imposed a stockholding limit restricting bulk consumers using over 10 tonnes a month from holding inventory beyond 15 days of consumption from September 1 to November 30.
