Government Approves Privatisation Plan for 11 Indian Airports

The Public Private Partnership Appraisal Committee has granted in-principle approval to the Ministry of Civil Aviation’s proposal to privatise 11 airports across five bundles. The airports include Amritsar, Kangra, Varanasi, Gaya, Kushinagar, Bhubaneswar, Hubballi, Raipur, Aurangabad, Tiruchirappalli, and Tirupati. The proposal must now secure final committee approval before being submitted to the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs for a final decision. To address concerns regarding bidder concentration, the ministry is finalising a cap on the number of airport bundles a single entity can acquire. These airports will be operated under 50-year concession agreements.
Why it matters
The move aims to expand private management of regional airports, though the government is balancing this with new ownership caps to prevent a monopoly similar to previous bidding rounds.
