Government Mandates Indian Standard Time for All Official and Commercial Systems

The Union government has notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, establishing Indian Standard Time (IST) as the mandatory reference for all legal, administrative, and commercial purposes. Notified by the Consumer Affairs Ministry on August 27, the rules provide a 180-day compliance window for government departments, businesses, and institutions to align their systems. This initiative aims to ensure synchronized time-stamping across critical sectors including banking, telecommunications, railways, and power grids. The government stated that the move is intended to reduce reliance on foreign satellite-based time sources by promoting the use of indigenous infrastructure and the NavIC satellite navigation system. The Ministry noted that current inconsistencies in time sources can disrupt the coordination of time-critical services and digital transactions.
