Government to Form High-Level Committee for Sugarcane Farmers
· India · Times of India, The Hindu
The Union government will establish a high-level committee within a week to address grievances from sugarcane farmers regarding sugar recovery rates, weighment, and payment delays. Agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan and food minister Pralhad Joshi announced the decision following a meeting with farmer delegations from Maharashtra and Karnataka. The panel will include representatives from the Centre, state governments, sugar mills, and agricultural scientists to examine technical issues. Farmers have demanded an increase in the Minimum Support Price for sugar from ₹31 per kg to ₹50 per kg, citing rising production costs ahead of the 2026-27 crushing season. The committee is expected to submit its recommendations within a stipulated timeframe.
Why it matters
The committee's findings will directly influence the financial viability of sugarcane farming in Maharashtra and Karnataka and could lead to a revision of the national support price for sugar.
