· Business · The Hindu, LiveMint

Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated the government collected ₹3.25 lakh crore from the mobile phone industry, including ₹25,000 crore in direct taxes and ₹3 lakh crore in GST, against ₹19,000 crore paid in production-linked incentives, according to data shared on October 28, 2026. The official data revealed mobile phone exports reached ₹2 lakh crore in fiscal year 2025 while imports fell to 0.02% of domestic demand in 2024-25 from 75% a decade ago. Electronic goods production rose six times to ₹11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25 from ₹1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15, with mobile phone production increasing to ₹5.5 lakh crore from ₹0.18 lakh crore. The minister emphasized mobile manufacturing employs 12 lakh people, or a quarter of the 25 lakh employed in electronics manufacturing overall.

Why it matters

This demonstrates the mobile manufacturing sector's profitability and employment impact, showing the PLI scheme's success in boosting exports and tax revenue while reducing import dependence.
