Govt Expands Census 2027 Enumerator Pool to Private Teachers and Trusts

· India · The Hindu, Indian Express

The Union government has broadened the definition of persons eligible to be appointed as Census enumerators by authorising private school teachers and members of institutions, societies, and trusts. An official stated that approximately 34 lakh enumerators are required to conduct the Population Enumeration, which is the second and penultimate phase of Census 2027. Previously, enumeration work was carried out primarily by government school teachers, revenue officials, and other state government employees. The Registrar General and Census Commissioner of India issued a notification in the official gazette on Friday, October 16, 2026, to implement the change. Earlier, various private teachers and school associations in states including Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Haryana had moved high courts against compulsory deployment for Census duties.

Why it matters

Private school teachers and management staff across multiple states are directly affected by mandatory deployment rules, while the administrative expansion aims to meet the massive personnel shortfall for the national Census count.
