Groq Raises $350 Million as It Shifts to Neocloud Business

· Technology · TechCrunch

Groq, a startup that originally built its own AI chips, raised $350 million in a funding round led by Disruptive with Nvidia planning to participate. The investment values the company at $3.5 billion, down from the $6.9 billion valuation it held last September before its founder and CEO Jonathan Ross joined Nvidia in a licensing deal. Groq says the new capital will support medium and large Nvidia‑accelerated clusters for training and inference and will help it scale from 54 megawatts to over 200 megawatts by 2027. The company currently operates 13 data centers globally and serves more than six million developers, enterprises, and AI‑native firms. Groq now positions itself as an Nvidia customer within the AI infrastructure ecosystem, moving away from its initial chip‑manufacturing focus.

Why it matters

The shift means Groq will supply Nvidia‑equipped AI inference services to a global market, affecting how developers and enterprises access high‑performance AI workloads. It also changes the competitive dynamics of AI chip sales and cloud infrastructure, potentially influencing investment flows in the sector.
