GRSE Launches Indigenous Ocean Research Vessel Sagar Manthan

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) launched the indigenous ocean research vessel Sagar Manthan at its Rishi Bankim Shipyard in Kolkata on September 9, 2026. Built for the National Centre for Polar and Ocean Research (NCPOR), the ₹840-crore vessel is designed to support India's Deep Ocean Mission. The 89.5-metre-long ship features a gross tonnage of 5,900 tonnes and is expected to be operational by early 2028. Officials stated the vessel will carry advanced geophysical and oceanographic research systems to enhance India's scientific capabilities in the Indian Ocean region. The construction milestone was achieved five months after the keel was laid.
Why it matters
The vessel strengthens India's deep-sea exploration capacity and scientific research infrastructure within the Indian Ocean, supporting the government's long-term Deep Ocean Mission.
