Gujarat Declares Four Districts Drought-Affected After Poor Monsoon
· India · The Hindu, Indian Express
The Gujarat government declared Devbhoomi Dwarka, Kutch, Jamnagar, and Porbandar districts as drought-affected following deficient rainfall during the monsoon season. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that the announcement follows central guidelines and will remain in effect for six months. The state recorded an overall 89 percent monsoon rainfall, but the four designated western districts received minimal precipitation. To assist affected farmers, the government announced a financial assistance of ₹8,500 per hectare for up to two hectares where crops have failed. Additionally, authorities are providing subsidised cattle fodder at ₹2 per kilogram and granting ₹80 per cattle daily to shelters, alongside offering 150 days of employment under the VB-G RAM G scheme starting November 1.
Why it matters
Farmers and cattle owners in the four drought-hit districts face severe livelihood and feed shortages, making state-backed financial aid and extended employment crucial for survival.
