Gujarat High Court Refuses Relief to Jailed AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava

The Gujarat High Court on Monday dismissed an application by AAP MLA Chaitar Vasava seeking suspension of his sentence in an assault and extortion case. Justice Vimal K Vyas held that lawmakers must guide citizens toward lawful remedies rather than intimidating government officials. The case stems from an October 2023 standoff in Narmada district's Bogaj village following a forest department anti-encroachment drive. An additional sessions court in Rajpipla had convicted Vasava, his wife Shakuntala, and several others on June 23. While denying relief to the legislator, the High Court suspended the sentence of 19-year-old co-accused Rikesh Vasava and granted bail to Shakuntala Vasava and other co-accused.
