Gurugram MP Blames Congress for Chronic Waterlogging
· India · India Today, Hindustan Times
Gurugram BJP MP Rao Inderjit Singh has dismissed current anti-waterlogging measures as a band-aid solution, pointing the finger at Congress-era construction over traditional drainage channels. Singh stated that rapid urbanisation over old drains that once carried water from the Aravalli Hills to the Yamuna has left the city vulnerable to flooding. His remarks followed heavy rain on August 24 that dumped 75 mm of rainfall between 8 am and 5 pm, bringing traffic to a standstill and stranding school buses. Singh asserted that constructing underground tunnels similar to Metro infrastructure along the paths of old drains is the only permanent solution and noted that the government is working to secure funds.
Why it matters
Residents and commuters in Gurugram face severe traffic paralysis and administrative disruptions during heavy rains due to inadequate stormwater management.
