Hackers Estimate Over 390,000 Russian Deaths In Ukraine War

· World · Euronews, Bloomberg

Hacker groups Kiberpartizany BY and Silent Crow claim to have breached Russia's Federal State Statistics Service, stealing 23 terabytes of internal data. Based on the stolen files, the groups estimate between 393,000 and 450,000 Russian citizens have died since the invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022. The variation in figures stems from different counting methods, with one group including non-combat deaths and casualties in occupied territories. Russia has not released official combat loss statistics since September 2022, and Rosstat stopped publishing annual causes of death in 2024.

Why it matters

These estimates provide a rare, albeit unverified, look into the demographic impact of the war, as official Russian casualty figures remain undisclosed.
