Hackers Exploiting macOS Screen Sharing Flaw to Deploy Crypto Miners

A critical vulnerability in the macOS Screen Sharing feature is currently being exploited by attackers to gain root access to targeted systems. The Netherlands' National Cyber Security Center reported that hackers are targeting devices with port 5900 exposed to the internet to install Monero cryptocurrency miners. Apple addressed this security flaw in early August by releasing updates for macOS Tahoe, macOS Sonoma, and macOS Sequoia. The company stated the patch improves state management to prevent unauthorized authentication to the screen sharing service. Users are advised to install the latest software updates immediately and utilize a VPN when screen sharing is active.
