Harvard Club of India Distances Itself From Alumni Protest Statement
· India · Hindustan Times, Indian Express, NDTV
The Harvard Club of India clarified on Monday that it did not issue or endorse a letter from 100 alumni condemning the police crackdown on protesters in Delhi. The letter, which criticized the detention of peaceful protesters during an October 10 demonstration against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reflected only the personal views of those individuals. Rajat Sethi, a member of the club's Executive Committee, stated that the organization's charter prohibits it from issuing political statements. Security forces detained 7,000 people during the October 10 protest, which saw 41,000 personnel deployed across the capital. The club emphasized that the alumni who signed the letter were not acting on behalf of the official organization or Harvard University.
Why it matters
This clarification prevents the misattribution of political views to the official alumni body, maintaining the organization's neutral institutional stance.
