Have to build confidence: SC to set up probe panel on Delhi protest violence

The Supreme Court will set up a high‑powered committee to probe claims of excessive police force and retaliation against officers during the July 20 protest in Delhi where students marched to Parliament demanding reforms in the NEET exam and the resignation of the education minister. The panel will include former Supreme Court and high‑court judges and a retired Director General of Police, with the possibility of adding a former CBI chief or state police chief. A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant said it would issue an order the following day after hearing all sides. Both allegations against the police and counter‑allegations of police violence will be examined, and the committee’s findings will be reported periodically to the court for further directions. Petitioners are represented by senior advocate N Hariharan and specialists such as Gopal Sankaranarayanan, Menaka Guruswamy, Shadan Farasat and Vrinda Grover.
