HDFC Bank Board Taps Global Search Firms for Jagdishan Successor

· Business · Economic Times

HDFC Bank's board and nomination and remuneration committee are set to appoint a global executive search firm this week to find a successor for outgoing CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan, 61, who retires in October. Egon Zehnder, Spencer Stuart and Korn Ferry are in the race for the mandate. Deputy managing director Kaizad Bharucha, appointed executive director in June 2014, is a frontrunner but faces a regulatory hurdle: the 15-year continuous-tenure cap for whole-time directors means he would hit the ceiling in June 2029 and could not complete a full three-year CEO term. Analysts at Macquarie Capital warned a short tenure for Bharucha would only defer the succession question and keep the stock range-bound until clarity emerges. The bank is also widening the search to candidates from other banks and NBFCs given the thin internal pipeline.

Why it matters

HDFC Bank is India's largest private-sector lender by assets, and a CEO transition with a shortened inner-circle runway could shape lending growth, margins and investor sentiment in the banking sector. External candidates from other banks and NBFCs signal a strategic reset that may reset succession cycles and executive mobility across Indian banking.
