Health Authorities Warn Head Injury Patients Against Public Waterbodies

Health officials in Malappuram have warned people with head injuries, facial wounds, or recent nasal surgeries to avoid public waterbodies due to a high risk of amoebic encephalitis. The advisory follows a joint study by the state Health department and the Indian Council of Medical Research, which found that swimming or diving in ponds and canals significantly raises infection risks for individuals with maxillofacial injuries. The state currently records a 25.8 per cent mortality rate for amoebic encephalitis, with Naegleria fowleri infections turning critical rapidly. Officials noted that poorly maintained wells, heavy rains, flooding, and sewage contamination can accelerate amoebae growth. The Health department has instructed local bodies to clean public ponds and ensure chlorination of wells following recent fatalities in the district.
