Heavy Rain Triggers Landslide on Erattupetta–Vagamon Road in Kottayam

Heavy rain lashed the eastern parts of Kottayam on Sunday, disrupting normal life and triggering a soil slippage on the Erattupetta–Vagamon road. The high-range areas of Teekoy, Thalanad, Poonjar, Adivaram and Vagamon received heavy showers from around 4 p.m., with Pala and Bharananganam also experiencing heavy rain. A landslide at Karikad Top on the Erattupetta–Vagamon road brought traffic to a halt after debris fell on two cars, though no injuries were reported. The rain led to a sharp increase in water flow in the tributaries of the Meenachil river, with muddy, turbulent water in the Teekoy area and water gushing onto the road at several points. Extremely heavy rain continued in Vagamon, Meladukkam and Adivaram areas till late in the evening. Poonjar MLA P.J. Sebastian urged people to avoid unnecessary travel through hilly areas and warned of a possible rise in the Meenachil river, urging residents in flood-prone areas to remain vigilant.
