· India · The Hindu, Indian Express, Hindustan Times
On 18 August 2026 the Karnataka High Court set aside the Governor’s order suspending Shivashankarappa S. Sahukar, the chairperson of the Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC). The Governor had suspended Sahukar over accusations that he facilitated the appointment of his two daughters to posts of Industrial Extension Officer through the KPSC. The court held that the Governor had acted without advice from the State Cabinet and without a reference to the Supreme Court under Article 317(1). Justice Suraj Govindaraj ordered Sahukar’s reinstatement and directed the President to refer the complaints to the Supreme Court for enquiry.
Why it matters
The ruling restores the chairperson of a key state recruitment agency and highlights limits on gubernatorial power in civil service matters, impacting the integrity and transparency of public appointments in Karnataka.
