High Turnout For Bypolls In 3 States, Puducherry; Humayun Kabir Arrested In Bengal
· India · NDTV, India Today
Bypolls saw strong voter turnouts across three states and the Union Territory of Puducherry amid tight security arrangements. In West Bengal, TMC leader Humayun Kabir was arrested following a heated argument with police officers on duty. Kabir accused the police of acting directly at the behest of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari during the confrontation. Polling proceeded largely uninterrupted in the remaining constituencies despite isolated opposition protests. Election officials reported no major untoward incidents from the other participating states.
Why it matters
The high voter turnout determines crucial legislative seats and tests political alignments in key regional pockets. The arrest of a prominent political figure in Bengal escalates local tensions between the ruling party and law enforcement.
