Himanta Sarma BJP victory in Nagaon bypoll
· India · India Today
Himanta Biswa Sarma campaigned for BJP candidate Devasish Sharma in the Nagaon Lok Sabha bypoll, overturning expectations that the seat would remain with Congress or AIUDF. Sharma, a former IAS officer and guitarist, won by a margin of 1.4 lakh votes, securing 49% of all votes cast. The victory came despite Upper Assam facing severe floods and the constituency's traditional Congress stronghold status. AIUDF chief Badruddin Ajmal finished second, while Congress candidate Sibamoni Bora trailed in third with 1.3 lakh votes. The bypoll was necessitated after sitting MP Pradyut Bordoloi vacated the seat to join the BJP and win the Dispur seat.
Why it matters
The result marks a significant shift in Assam's political landscape, demonstrating BJP's growing organisational reach in Muslim-majority areas and reducing Congress's Lok Sabha tally from 99 to 98.
