HMT Special-Edition Watches Sell Out, Prompt 2.5‑km Queue in Bengaluru

· Business · Hindustan Times, Indian Express

HMT launched a limited‑edition series of watches on August 15 to mark India’s 80th Independence Day, sparking a 2.5‑km queue of customers in Bengaluru. The queue formed at the Jalahalli outlet and the nearby HMT Bhavan near Mekhri Circle, and both outlets sold out their stock within a day. Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy said the long queue demonstrated the enduring popularity of the HMT brand. HMT Chairman and Managing Director Ramesh announced that additional watches will be manufactured by the end of next month and that automatic watches will also be introduced. The launch comes as HMT is trying to revive its Bengaluru factory after halting main watch production in 2016 and filing to strike off the legal entity in January 2026.

Why it matters

The strong consumer response supports the government’s plan to revive HMT’s Bengaluru plant and could create jobs while showing sustained interest in heritage Indian brands.
