Houthi forces have expanded their control along the Red Sea coast, capturing Mocha and reaching Perim Island at the Bab al-Mandeb strait. This strategic advance provides the movement with significant influence over a critical global maritime corridor. The offensive follows a period of relative calm after a United Nations-mediated truce that began in April 2022. During this pause, the Houthis significantly increased their military strength, with UN reports estimating their forces grew to 350,000 personnel by 2024. Meanwhile, the internationally recognised government remained divided and failed to consolidate its military or administrative position.
