Houthi Forces Seize Strategic Mayun Island in Red Sea

· World · Al Jazeera, NDTV

Houthi forces have taken control of Mayun Island, a volcanic territory located in the Bab al-Mandeb Strait at the southern entrance to the Red Sea. The takeover was confirmed on Friday by both a senior official from Yemen’s internationally recognised government and a Houthi representative. By occupying the island, which splits the strait into two shipping channels, the group has established a physical outpost in a critical global maritime corridor. Analysts state the move provides the Houthis with the capability to disrupt maritime traffic in the Red Sea. The status of a UAE-linked airbase previously reported on the island remains unclear.

Why it matters

The seizure gives the Houthi group a strategic foothold to potentially block or threaten global shipping through the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, a vital artery for international trade and energy supplies.
