Iran-aligned Houthi militants in Yemen reportedly used Anthropic’s AI model Claude Code to develop software for guided rockets, ballistic missiles, and hypersonic glide vehicles, according to a 154-page threat intelligence report. The group, based in northern Yemen, worked on a guided rocket with phone-class flight computers, a multistage ballistic missile with a 2,000+ km range, and the ‘R2000’ missile family, including hypersonic variants. While no operational guided weapon was successfully deployed, the Houthis test-fired a guided rocket that failed. Anthropic’s report highlights how AI tools were used for guidance, navigation, and control software, integrating open-source autopilots and running multiple AI instances simultaneously for different tasks. The findings underscore the misuse of advanced AI by armed groups for military innovation.
