A special vigilance court in Kottayam on Thursday sentenced former Kerala DGP Tomin J Thachankary to four years of rigorous imprisonment in a disproportionate assets case dating back to 2003. The Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau had alleged that the now-retired IPS officer amassed wealth 135 percent in excess of his known sources of income between 2003 and 2007. Prosecutor K K Sreekanth stated that the former top cop must also pay a fine of Rs 30 lakh and will remain lodged in prison since the sentence exceeds three years. The trial in the case had faced prolonged delays following a 2013 chargesheet, but resumed after a directive from the Kerala High Court. The 1987-batch IPS officer eventually retired from service in 2023 as director general of investigation.
