How a fake Iran nuclear quote travelled from an Indian X account to Netanyahu’s speech

An unverified claim regarding Iran s nuclear programme originated from an anonymous X account based in India on the morning of August 5. The post falsely claimed that Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi stated Iran would never abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons. Within hours, the claim was translated into Hindi, shared by an Israeli account named Mossad Commentary, and broadcast on Israeli Channel 14. Yair Netanyahu amplified the posts, and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu subsequently cited the quote in a speech. The New York Times traced the spread across platforms, noting there is no evidence Vahidi made the statement or that Iran possesses a nuclear weapon.
