How Long Will Humans Be Needed For AI Translation?
· Technology · BBC News
AI translation systems are processing massive volumes of text, with Google reporting one trillion words translated monthly through Google Translate alongside tools like DeepL, Microsoft, Claude, and Gemini. Direct sales of machine translation reached an estimated $1.4bn last year, making raw AI output the preferred choice for internal documents and product listings where speed matters more than minor errors. Swiss non-profit OKA, which translates Wikipedia articles into other languages, draft-produces content via AI before human translators review each sentence. However, the quality of machine output has advanced to the point where skipping human review entirely is becoming a serious option across the industry. This shift raises questions about the future role of human translators as automated systems handle increasingly complex texts without requiring corrections.
Why it matters
Professional translators and translation agencies face mounting pressure as AI systems produce high-quality output that reduces the need for manual review.
