IAEA Reports Syria Site Infrastructure Matches Nuclear Reactor Design

· World · Hindustan Times, Al Jazeera

A Syrian site in Deir Ezzor held infrastructure consistent with a nuclear reactor, according to a confidential IAEA report. The UN nuclear watchdog confirmed the finding during inspections last month. Syria failed to report nuclear material, facilities, and activities during the rule of Bashar al-Assad. The IAEA found around 73 tonnes of natural uranium metal, including 55 tonnes of fuel rods. The agency will continue monitoring the site as excavation progresses.

Why it matters

This raises concerns about undisclosed nuclear activities in Syria, potentially violating international non-proliferation agreements. The findings could trigger further scrutiny and diplomatic responses from global powers.
