IAF Chief Flags Pakistan-China Jet Collaboration and Fifth-Gen Options
· World · Times of India, Indian Express
Indian Air Force Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh stated in New Delhi on Saturday that Pakistan's collaboration with China to build fifth-generation fighter jets is a cause for concern. Speaking at his annual press conference, Singh noted that while current capabilities can ward off the threat temporarily, India must accelerate the induction of fifth-generation aircraft. The IAF chief reported that the force currently operates 29 fighter squadrons against an authorised strength of 42, requiring 36 to 40 new aircraft annually to bridge the shortfall. He added that the IAF may need to explore foreign fighter platforms if the indigenous Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft programme faces delays. Russia has offered its Su-57 fighter jets along with a joint production proposal, but Singh confirmed that the IAF has not yet made a decision.
Why it matters
The delay in India's indigenous fighter jet program and the widening squadron deficit force military planners to weigh foreign acquisitions against regional security pressures.
