IAF Chief Warns of Alternative Fighter Jet Plans Amid AMCA Delays

· India · Times of India, LiveMint

Air Chief Marshal AP Singh announced that the Indian Air Force may seek alternative fighter platforms due to ongoing development delays with the indigenous fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft. The force currently operates 29 fighter squadrons, significantly below the sanctioned strength of 42, and requires the induction of 36 to 40 aircraft annually to bridge this gap. Negotiations are currently underway for the acquisition of 114 Rafale fighters, with plans for the majority of these jets to be manufactured in India. While Russia has offered its Su-57 aircraft for potential joint production, the Air Chief confirmed that no formal decision has been reached regarding the proposal.

Why it matters

The IAF's critical shortage of fighter squadrons directly impacts India's national security readiness, forcing the military to balance indigenous development timelines against urgent procurement needs.
