ICMR Clarifies No New H1N1 Strain in India Amid Delhi Surge

Senior scientists at the Indian Council of Medical Research have clarified that the Influenza A H1N1 viruses circulating in India are not a new strain and there is no cause for panic. The circulating viruses belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025 strain under clade 6B.1A.5a2a and are well-matched with Northern Hemisphere vaccine recommendations. Seasonal influenza remains mostly self-limiting, presenting with fever, cough, headache, and body ache, though young children, the elderly, and individuals with underlying conditions face higher risks. Meanwhile, Delhi has reported over 1,777 H1N1 cases this year, including 114 new infections on a single Thursday, prompting the Delhi government to issue advisories and place 35 hospitals under special surveillance.
