If Gyanesh Kumar goes, Modi will have to follow suit: Dipke

· India · The Hindu, India Today

Thousands of protesters demonstrated outside Mumbai's Shivaji Park on October 2, 2026 against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Election Commission's nationwide special intensive revision exercise, organised by Cockroach Janta Party on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar demanded resignation by the protestors, who shouted slogans including 'Gyanesh karo resign' and 'Inquilab Zindabad'. CJP also demanded criminal proceedings against Kumar, freezing the SIR process, restoring the January 2025 voters list, and repealing the 2023 law governing Election Commissioner appointments. Abhijeet Dipke raised slogans saying 'If Gyanu is gone, then Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also go', asserting the PM's office runs because of the ECI.

Why it matters

The protest intensifies pressure on the Election Commission ahead of upcoming elections, with opposition parties demanding accountability over electoral roll integrity and the appointment process of key constitutional functionaries.
