IIT Bombay Closes Lecture Hall for Overnight Study, Sparking Student Backlash

IIT Bombay has discontinued its practice of keeping rooms in the Lecture Hall Complex open overnight during mid-semester examinations. The administration cited cleanliness, security concerns, and littering as the reasons for the night closure. In response to student demands, the institute opened four rooms in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering as an alternative study space. However, students have criticized the alternative arrangement as inadequate because it lacks sufficient charging points for laptops and tablets. Insight, the student media body, highlighted that the Lecture Hall Complex had traditionally served as a vital overnight study hub for hostel residents with limited space and connectivity.
