IIT-Bombay Student Suicide Sparks Fresh Debate on Campus Pressure

Sahil Wakode, a student at IIT-Bombay, died by suicide last Friday after allegedly being caught using his phone in an examination hall. The incident has intensified scrutiny on the extreme academic pressures and social hierarchies within India's premier technical institutions. Over the past decade, the IIT system has recorded more than 170 student suicides, with a high proportion involving students from SC and ST communities. While institutions frequently respond by expanding counseling services and wellness helplines, experts argue that individualizing distress overlooks deeper systemic issues. An interim report issued in June by a Supreme Court-appointed task force led by retired judge Justice Ravindra Bhat noted that students often find institutional grievance mechanisms difficult to access or overly tokenistic.
