IIT-Bombay Suspends Tougher Cheating Penalties After Student Suicide
· India · Times of India, India Today
IIT-Bombay has put its July 2026 academic misconduct rules on hold following the death by suicide of a second-year BTech student. The institute will revert to its 2015 policy for upcoming mid-semester examinations scheduled for October 10 and 11. Under the interim procedure, faculty will record suspected cheating in a specific form, and students will be allowed to submit a written account of their version. Disciplinary cases will be reviewed by the departmental disciplinary action committee only after the exam season concludes. The new guidelines also mandate that invigilators alert a quick response team of counsellors if they suspect a student is under stress.
Why it matters
The decision reflects a significant shift in how elite institutions handle academic integrity and student mental health during high-pressure examination periods.
