IIT Delhi Starts Solar Diploma at Sonipat With ISA Fellows From Eight Countries
· India · Indian Express, NDTV
IIT Delhi has launched the first academic programme at its Sonipat campus, a one-year Postgraduate Diploma in Solar Systems and Management, in partnership with the International Solar Alliance (ISA) and France's Institut National de l'Énergie Solaire (INES). The inaugural batch began on September 3, 2026, with nine international fellows from eight countries, sponsored by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO). The course, run by IIT Delhi's Department of Energy Science and Engineering, will train ISA-nominated fellows to become trainers at Solar Technology and Application Resource Centres (STAR-C) across ISA's 120-plus member countries. Fellows will also do a one-month internship in Europe in applied solar technologies after completing the diploma. The programme stems from a Framework for Action formalised between IIT Delhi and the ISA earlier in 2026.
Why it matters
The programme positions IIT Delhi as a global hub for solar capacity building and gives Indian faculty a direct role in training renewable-energy workforces across the Global South, with potential follow-on programmes at the Sonipat campus in the coming years.
